A CROSS-WORD S.O.S.

To the Editor. Sir,—l am a regular reader of your paper, and when I have devoured the news I have been in the habit of try’ing to solve the crossword puzzle, from which I used to derive a fair amount of pleasure and instruction. I i do not know who set these puzzles, but to solve them as they* have been appearing recently one would require ! a fair-sized library*, and as I do not | possess this I do not attempt to solve them. Is it necessary to take one back to deeds of the sixteenth century or to Russia and other foreign countries to secure clues? It may* be necessary to have clues of this description, but I consider that if the clues were more straightforward and related to present times and local events puzzleites would have more pleasure in trying to work them out.—l am, etc., A HILL IN ICELAND.
