AUSTRALIAN BUTTER BEST IN WORLD, ASSERTS EXPERT.

CONFERENCE URGES SENDING INVESTIGATOR TO DOMINION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received Tune 25, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 25. At the annual conference of Co-opera-tive Dairy Factory Managers and Secretaries Mr M’lnnes, dairy expert, in a lecture comparing the various preference policies covering the industry in New Zealand, New Sbuth Wales and other States, said that New Zealand's policy was preference for export quality, whilst New South Wales showed a preference for the local market. The figures for consumption per capita in the peak production year of 1024-25 were illustrative of the effect of these policies. In New Zealand butter consumption per capita was 25 5 pounds, in New South Wales 31 i pounds, and in the Commonwealth as a whole 28 pounds. The speaker contended that in Australia they made better butter at less cost than in any other country in the world. lie said the quality of Australian butter was going up by leaps and bounds. Australian production of the past eight years averaged about 106,000 tons a year and in 1925-26 showed an increase of from 12,000 to 13,000 tons above this. Population was the principal factor in butter trading policy. In Australia it was four times greater than that of New Zealand. The local trade in New South Wales was twice as great as New Zealand's. After considerable discussion on cheese manufacture the Conference decided to circularise Boards of Directorates in regard to financing a visit of one delegate to New Zealand to report on investigations there. It was agreed t.o ask the State Government to allow a dairy expert to proceed on such visit.
