UNEMPLOYMENT IS NOW GROWING LESS.

FIFTY MEN PLACED BY R.S.A. COMMITTEE. No small measure of success has attended the efforts of the Returned Soldier’s Association Unemployment Committee, Avho have found Avork for OA*er fifty men- The Secretary states that the position has grown much easier during the last two days. The committee wish to acknowledge with thanks a donation of £5 towards the fund. This was received through the post from an anonymous donor. DONATIONS TO FUND NOW EXCEED £2OO. At the meeting of the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) was in the chair, and there were also present—Messrs C. H. Hewlett, A. F. Drayton, E. H. Marriner, H. Worrall, A. Dudley Dobson, F. C, Ellis, R. B. Owen, A. R. Galbraith (City Engineer), and E. G. Queree (Unemployment Officer of the Labour Department). Messrs E. H. Andrews and W. E. Leadlev sent apologies for unavoidable absence. It was decided that the delegates appointed by the City Council and A-arious interested organisations should constitute the general committee, and to ask the Benevolent Committee of the Hospital Board to send a representati\*e to the committee* The Social Welfare Guild is also to be asked to appoint a representatiA-e. Mr Galbraith (City Engineer), Mr J. Young (the Curator of the Domains) and Mr J. S. Neville (Town Clerk) Avere added to the General Committee. Messrs Andrews, Leadley, Hewlett, Worrall and Owen were appointed an executiA*e to deal with urgent cases. Mr Hewlett, chairman of the Finance Sub-committee, submitted a statement showing that the subscriptions received by the City Treasurer to day had amounted to £2ll 8s 6d. The statement Avas adopted. Mr Hewlett said that the work of sending out the appeals would probably be completed by to-morrow. Upon Mr Hewlett* asking what work the council could haA’e put in hand, the Mayor said that the chairman of the Works Committee (Mr E. H. Andrews) would haA*e to be interviewed. In declaring the meeting closed, the Mayor said the executi\-c would be called together to confer with representatives of the City Council.
