CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE REVIEWS POSITION.

There are three unemployment organisations in Christchurch at present:— The Citizens’ Unemployment Committee, a representative body which controls the expenditure of money subscribed by the public. The Trades Hall Unemployment Committee, which consists of trade union secretaries. A committee of unemployed, of which the Communist leader is the secretary and organiser. All three bodies held meetings today, but the only one open to the newspaper representath'es was that of the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee. Meetings of the unemployed are not open to the Press as a result of a decision of a majority of the committee, but notice of motion has been given that the resolution be rescinded. The Trades Hall Unemployment Committee has appointed a sub-committee to supply reports to the newspapers. NEW REGISTRATIONS. Nine .new registrations and about twenty renewals were received at the unemployment bureau of the Labour Department this morning. Two men were sent to private employment. The unemployment officer stated that the men engaged by the Curator of the Domains Board for improving the paths in the domain with money received from the Canterbury Rugby Union, had not been selected from his list, although it was understood that the list was to be recognised as the official unemployment register in the city. GOVERNMENT RELIEF WORKS. The Public Works Department has engaged a total of sixty-two men for its relief works —forty at Sumner and twenty-two at Dyer’s Pass. The contract system of employment has already been put into operation at Dyer's Pass, and it is intended to introduce it at Sumner shortly. Under the system the men are paid according to the value of the work they actually do, some being able to earn high wages and others, who are less efficient, not doing as well as they would under the day labour system.
