PROFESSORS HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY OF STUDYING ABROAD.

The introduction of a Sabbatical year for professors at the Auckland University is not exactly a new idea for New Zealand, though it is somewhat in advance of the procedure that has been adopted in Christchurch for nearly two decades. The University College of Auckland has decided that member? of the faculty are to be released from their duties for twelve months every seventh year for the purpose of travel and study abroad. In Christchurch the professors have been allowed one year's leave of absence after ten years’ service, but the salary of the substitute has been paid by the member relieved from duty. There is no suggestion tfiat that applies in Auckland. It is a practice quite general in America to give university professors an opportunity of going overseas periodically, and, doubtless, Canterbury will fall in with the step taken by Auckland. It is, however, a matter to be decided by the Board of Governors of the College, but the feeling exists among the professors at Canterbury College that such action will be taken. The question of tours abroad was before the University Commission last year and for some time ha« been pressed by college lecturers. So far Wellington and Otago have not taken any steps in the matter, and whether those centres will fall in with the idea or not remains to be seen.
