FINDING WORK IN THE CITY.

UNEMPLOYED MEN GIVEN POSITIONS. Fifteen men were selected at the City Council reserves depot in Chester Street to start work immediately. Thirty were summoned to attend. Some did not roll up, and letters were received from one or two stating that they had been fortunate enough to obtain employment elsewhere. Ten of the men were taken to the Heathcote River, where the long neglected work near the Radley bridge was begun. The other five and an additional man were taken to the racecourse reserve at Sandilanris, which is controlled by the City Council. This area, which is of thirty acres, will be cleared and planted. This morning there were ten new applications at the Labour Department, and twenty renewals. There was an increase of 31 registrations for the week ending June 21, the number being 262, as against 231 for the previous week. It was made up as follows: —Baker 1, blacksmiths 3, boot operatives 3, butchers 5, cabinetmakers 3, carpenters 3, clerks 6, cooks 6, drivers 18, engineers 9, farm hands 6, grocers’ assistants 3, hotel workers 5, labourers 171, mechanics 7. painters 9, salesmei? 2, storeman 1, tinsmith 1. During the week the Department placed 38 men in private employment, and 25 were sent to public works. Exception was taken by Mr R. B. Owen to Mr Fournier’s committee. He says that the unemployment organisation got on well without Mr Fournier in the past, and it does not appreciate his intervention now. “ No Press.” “ Meeting of Unemployed at 9 a.m. NO PRESS.” was the sign which was displayed outside the social hall at the Trades Hall this morning. Mr Fournier was approached as to why the reporters had been excluded. “ I cannot say; I cannot say,” Mr Fournier repeated with emphasis. The trades union secretaries held a meeting this, morning, but the chairman (Mr 11. Worrafl) stated that there was nothing to report.

AUCKLAND SHOWS GREAT ACTIVITY.

RANKS OF UNEMPLOYED STEADILY DEPLETED. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 23. The ranks of the unemployed in Auckland are being steadily depleted as special works authorised by various local bodies are being put in hand. Yesterday the register of the Labour Bureau contained the names of 800 men who had lodged applications for work. Of these 630 were listed as capable of doing heavy work and 170 light work only, while employment had been found for forty-eight since the previous day. The numlber registered at noon on Monday was 527. A total of 404 men have been given employment since the Unemployment Committee was set up. The position should be greatly improved in the next week or two, as a number of local bodies are only awaiting Government sanction for the raising of money for urgent works. When the preliminaries are completed there will be employment for a large number of unskilled The Mount Albert Borough Council is anxious to make an early start with some works authorised by the ratepayers at a poll last week, and the Mayor (Mr L. F. Rhodes) and the Town Clerk (Mr IT. Utting) left Wellington last evening to interview the Minister of Finance and make arrangements for raising portion of the loan money of £3,000.000 authorised. It is hoped by this means to find employment for many of those now seeking work.
