OIL IS NOT WANTED NEAR AUCKLAND HARBOUR
(Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 23. The harbour-master yesterday, reporting on the arrangement for cleaning out the tanks of the navy tanker, Xucula, said that the spot where the Marine Department had given permission for cleaning the tanks was only ten miles outside Great Barrier Island and there was a grave possibility of the oil finding its way into the Hauraki Gulf with easterly weather. He recommended that the board request the Department to reconsider its decision and fix the position not icss than 150 miles from the nearest coast. The recommendation was adopted.
