PLAN TO WIDEN STANMORE ROAD.

CITY COUNCIL HOLDS OVER CONSIDERATION

With regard to the widening of Stanmore Road the By-Laws Committee reported to last night’s meeting of the City Council that an offer had been re-

ceived of a property' required for widening the street at £650. This property was valued by the city valuer Mr A. Freeman), in 1924, at £525, and as it was necessary to obtain the land to complete the widening of Stanmore Road, it was recommended that the property' be purchased, according to Mr Freeman’s valuation. In reply to Councillor Andrews, Councillor Agar .stated that there was £ISOO on the estimates for the widening of Stanmore Road. Councillor Andrews said that the item was on the proposed estimates, which had not yet been adopted, and if the Works Committee's estimates were cut down, as usually happens, other work would have to suffer. He moved that the matter be held over until after the estimates came up for consideration. Councillor Andrews’s amendment was carried by eight votes to seven. There were present at the meeting:— The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) and Councillors E. R. M'Combs, C. L. Carr, F. R. Cooke, A. M’Kellar. E. 11. Andrews, W. J. Sim, A. F. Carey', J. W. du Feu, T. H. Butterfield. C. T. Aschman, A. \V. Beaven, A. D. Ford, C. P. Agar and O. W. B. Anderson. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors D. G. Sullivan, M.P., and W. E. Leadley. ABATTOIRS WATER SUPPLY. The Abattoir Committee reported that it had had under consideration for some time the question of improving the water supply at the abattoirs, as the existing supply' was inadequate. The city engineer had submitted a scheme, the estimated cost of which was £602 10s. The resultant flow would be 4800 gallons per hour. The present means of supply- might still be kept in operation so that from the combined pumping it would be possible to obtain a steady flow of 6800 gallons per hour in addition to the storage tanks (capacity 10,000 gallons) which were filled during the night by an electrically driven pump. Should the buildings be re-modelled at any future date, the proposed scheme could be readily adapted to the new conditions. The commit tee recommended that authority be given for the work to be put in hand, the cost to be paid out of the Abattoir Enlargement and Improvement Loan. The recommendation was adopted. With reference to the request of the St Albans Burgesses’ Association for permission to erect a shelter in connection with the children's playground, St Albans Park, the Reserves Committee reported that the engineer had prepared a plan and estimate of a suitable building. The committee recommended that the plan be forwarded to the association for approval, with an intimation that the council was prepared to grant permision for the erection of the building. The report was adopted. Reporting on traffic inspectors’ uniforms, the-By-Laws Committee stated that two tenders had been received. Owing to the shortness of time between the council meeting and July 1, when the recently-appointed inspectors are to take up their duties, the committee had accepted the lower .tender, that of Messrs Strange and Co., Ltd., for the supply of the uniforms, including tunics, trousers, breeches, caps and leggings, at £5 13s each. The report was adopted. CLARKSON’S AVENUE. The By-Laws Committee reported that an application had been received for permission to erect a dwelling, workshop and motor-shed on a section at the south-east corner of Clarkson’s Avenue and Cashel Street, the dwelling to stand within 2ft 6in of the boundary line, and the workshop and motor-shed right on the boundary line of Clarkson’s Avenue. The committee had advised the owner that it could not see its way to allow any portion of the buildings to encroach within 10ft of Clarkson’s Avenue. On receipt of this advice, the owner had written stating that he intended proceeding with the buildings immediately' in accordance with his plan submitted. The committee was of opinion that Clarkson's Avenue should be widened on the eastern side and recommended the council to give notice to the applicant that it was the council’s intention to take a strip of land along the whole of his Clarkson’s Avenue frontage for a depth of 10 feet for readwidening purposes. It had also been decided to advise the applicant not to proceed with his building, as this recommendation was going forward. The report was adopted. MISCELLANEOUS. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was decided to advertise for an additional assistant accountant for the City Treasurer's Department. It was stated that the appointment was necessary' owing to the increase in the work of the department. The By-Laws Committee reported an application had been received for a permit to erect a petrol service station containing three pumps on sections Nos. 181-185. Manchester Street, City. In view' of the fact that the city inspector recommended that permission be not granted owing to the amount of traffic passing tip and down in front of the premises where it was proposed to instal the station, the committee had decided to refuse the application. The report was referred back to the committee for further consideration. The Electricity Committee reported that it had decided that the chairman of the committee (Councillor A. M’Kellar), the manager and the engineer, should represent the council at the annual conference of Power Boards to be held at Wellington, commencing on July 6. The conference was the occasion for the discussion of all matters affecting electrical supply authorities throughout the country, and was considered to be of growing importance. The By-Law Committee reported that an application had been received from Mr O. von Sierakowski for permission to erect two cycle stands in front of the White Swan Hotel, Tuam Street. The committee had granted permission for the erection of cycle rests, subject to such rests being constructed to the satisfaction of the Chief City Inspector, and to their being removed every evening at 6 o’clock, and not being re-erec.ted before 9 o’clock the following morning. The report was adopted. It was agreed that the Mayor and Councillors Aschman, Sim, Carr and Agar should be a sub-committee to deal with the standing orders of the council.
