ALARMING INCREASE IN DRAINAGE RATE.
NEW LEVY WILL BE SUBJECT TO INQUIRY.
The Christchurch Drainage Board forwarded to the City Council last night a special order for the levying of the rates for the year ending March 31, 1927, as follows: Sewerage area 32-64ths of a penny, an increase of 5-64ths over last year's rate; rural Christchurch, 5-32nds of a penny, a decrease of l-32nd; rural Woolston (including Radley). 2-64ths of a penny’, a decrease of 9-64t.h; rural Spreydon, ith of a penny, an increase of 1 16th; rural Riccarton, 17-64ths of a penny, an increase of 7 64ths; rural Heathcote (including St Martins), 7-64ths of a penny', a decrease of 7-64ths. The board also notified that it would be sufficient for its financial requirements if the following were collected in respect of interest on loans: £2.5,000 loan, the sum of £1112; £27,000 loan, £2072; £700,000 loan, a rate of 49-64ths of a penny' in the pound on the capital value. The letter was referred tc the Finance Committee, Councillor Agar stating that the increase in the rates was certainly alarming and would be inquired into by r the committee. The Waimakariri River Trust forwarded the special order directing the making of a general rate on rateable property within the Waimakariri River Trust District for the year ended March 31, 1927. as follows: On land classified in class A, one-sixth of a penny; class 73, one-seventh; class C, one eighth. The rates are the same as those levied last year. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee for consideration.
