GILROY AND LEAGUE.

To the Editor. Sir, —Again I must crave a little of your valuable space in order to reply to “ Senex.” llow he does love to embellish his statements with flowery phrases, twitting me at the same time with being a Rugbyite. I’ll guarantee that I have seen more League games than he has Union, in fact it is only because Lancaster Park is more convenient, less damp underfoot and warmer—probably the large crowd raises the temperature of the atmosphere—than Monica Park that I don’t go more often to the latter place, so I can’t be such a dyed-in-the-wool Rugbyite as “ Senex ” would have you to believe. He seems to think that any rabid Leagueite can rush into print and make wild statements without being reproved by anyone but a Rugbyite. I can assure him that, in proportion, there are just as many broadminded League partisans as there are Union, every bit. “ Senex ” seems annoyed because I made no mention in my previous letter of the refusal in the first place of Gilroy’s application. It was not necessary, Mr Editor, because I am not out to dispute facts, only to refute wild statements. The New Zealand Rugby Union had reasons of its own for refusing the transfer in 1925, but since then more pressure has been brought to bear, for the Marist Club in Invercargill were very anxious for Gilroy to play for them this season, and the application was granted in order that he could play in Invercargill. “ Senex ” insinuates and would have you believe that the transfer would never haye been granted if Gilroy had stopped in Invercargill. Mere humbug, Mr Editor.—l am, etc., DELMAR.
