AMERICANS SAY BRITISH TRAINS ARE THE BEST.

The. special train conveying the .American hotel proprietors and managers who are on a visit to Britain, broke all records for the journey from Manchester to Fns ton last night; covering the distance (IS9 miles) in 3 hours 17 minutes, and- arriving in London fit (•.55 p.m., seven minutes before schedule time. The train averaged nearly 60 miles an hour throughout, and the maximum speed reached was S 3 miles art hour. There were three stages in the journey where the speed was reduced to 15 miles an hour owing to the state of the permanent way, and in this manner ten minutes was lost. “Considering the size of the train and the weight - , 3136 tons, said an official of the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway, “the run was a record one." “It was a wonderful run,” said one of the Americans. “Vour trains can beat anything we have ever seen. Some of us • came from California and we travelled over 3,000 miles by train to New York before we embarked for England. and we have never met anything equal to the trains of this country.” When the train arrived at Euston Station the Americans gathered round the engine-driver, Mr James Benson, ot Manchester, and congratulated him on his great performance.
