RAIN CHECKS BIG HOTEL FIRE DURING NIGHT.
THRILLING SCENES ARE WITNESSED BY CROWD. (Special to the “Star.”) LONDON. April 16 Thrilling scenes were witnessed by Wge crowd;; at a great hotel fire at Ilfracombe yesterday. Miss Cortnack, the proprietress of the Grand Hotel, discovered the fire as she was having a look round the building about 8.30 last night. She heard a j crackling noise in the top storey, and as she went to ascertain the cause she was met by tongues of flame. The staff hurried upstairs when she gave the alarm, and workers at a garage opposite rushed in with fire extinguishers. Their efforts seemed to be useless as the lire spread with amazing rapidity. Firemen and a host of volunteers worked till nearly four o'clock this morning before the fire was put out. For seme hours neighbouring buildings were in danger, but about midnight there was a welcome terrific downpour of rain, which assisted considerably in preventing the fire from spreading. With the exception of a few of the front rooms the hotel was gutted, and most of the furniture was destroyed.
