FIFTY MEN WILL BE EMPLOYED ON DYER’S PASS ROAD.

(Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON”, June 1. Mr Sullivan, member for Avon, who was visiting Auckland when the question of lpcal unemployment was brought before the Prime Minister, interviewed Mr Coates regarding the situation in Christchurch, and obtained a promise that immediate work would be found on Dyer’s Pass Road. Mr Sullivan since has been informed that the number of unemployed to be absorbed in this direction is fifty, and that further arrangements are being made by the Government to employ about two hundred more men. “ There is undoubtedly a great deal of unemployment in Auckland,” commented Mr Sullivan to a representative of the “Star,” and the situation appears to be worse there than in any other part of the Dominion. Estimates vary regarding the number of men needing work. They range from 400 to 2000, but it seems that at least 1000 are in need. Some are so financially distressed that, they are sleeping out.”
