AMERICA WINS GORDON-BENNETT BALLOON RACE.
Ey Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrlght- “ Sydney Sun’” Cable. BRUSSELS, May 31. The American balloon Good-year, with three pilots, won the Gordon Bennett race. The balloon landed at Soeldeborg. Sweden. It covered 850 kilometres (530 miles). There were seventeen balloons, representing seven nations. In the Gordon Bennett race, the assistant pilot of the American balloon was thrown out when it grounded near Antwerp. The balloon continued its flight. The British machine will be .landed at Waalwyck. It has covered 75 kilometres. The Swiss balloon has landed at Edc. It covered 130 kilometres. In 1924 the Gordon Bennett Cup was won outright by Belgium (E. Demuyter, pilot), the distance covered being about 410 miles. A new cup was competed for in 1925, which was won by B6lgium (Veenstra, pilot) from seventeen rivals of seven nations. Veenstra landed at Cape Torifiona, Spain, aboiit 850 miles. Another Belgian balloon landed on the s.s. Vaterland, forty miles west of Brest. The ascent was from Brussels. The ballooning record is 1895 miles, held by Germany. British record 1117 miles; French record 1370 miles.
