DANGEROUS STATE OF LEVEL CROSSINGS.

CANTERBURY WORKS ON URGENT LIST

(Special to the "Star.”) WELLINGTON, May 1. Reports on the railway crossing- of the Dominion were recently collected by the National Highways Board, the district engineers of the Public Works Department submitting to the board lists of crossings in their areas, excluding crossings within boroughs, which do not come under the board’s jurisdiction. The board recently reviewed the position of 300 crossings, and it was found that no. fewer than 73 are in the three highway districts which cover the province of Canterbury. Reports are not' complete from the whole of Canterbury, but the board has been able to submit to the Railway Department, with a view to its co-operation, a list of the most urgent crossings for attention. They are noted in their order of importance: 1. —Waipara-Kaikoura highway via Culverden. An overbridge and road deviation at Waikari township. 2. —ln Weka Pass, road deviation and culvert. On the Christchurch-Dunedin highway. overbridges are recommended at Selwyn railway station, the north end of Rakaia bridge, north end of Ashburton, and at Hinds railway station.
