PIKE AT NEW BRIGHTON. A fire occurred before 5 a.m. In a five-roomed bungalow situated at 173, Richmond Terrace, New Brighton. The house was owned by Mr L. McCracken and, occupied by Mr and Mrs Payne and their four children. The fire, which started In the rear portion of the house, was discovered by Mr Payne, who happened to be awake at the time. The brigade immediately responded to he alarm, but were unable to save lie bungalow , or any of its concents, as th© fire had gained too strong a hold. -The insurances were £750 with the Guardian Assurance and £25.b. on the furniture with the Farmers' Insurance Office. DEATH OP MR E. C. CHEGWIN. The death occurred to-day of Mr E. C. Chegwin, a very well-known citizen of . Christchurch. He had been living in retirement for some years, but it was only lately that in's health failed. lie was an enthusiastic bowler, and was known on the bowling greens of the Dominion from Auckland to the Bluff. For many years ho was a member of the Sydenham Bowling Club, and he was practically the founder of the Beckenham Club, which owed much to his energy and enthusiasm. Uu took a prominent part in Lho government of tne game, being member of the Christchurch Conti© many years.
