£2O FINES FOR BOOKMAKING.

As a result of a police raid on premises in Thorndon Quay yesterday, Douglas Allan Hogg (twenty-nine) was charged with keeping a common gaming house. He pleaded guilty. The Chief Detective quoted bets recorded, including ones for £SB. £ls and £‘-2, and also a treble of £6OO to £1 The police believed accused had been employed by a wealthy bookmaker. The defence, was that Hogg drifted into bookmaking after giving up the hairdressing business, owing to poor health. He was fined £2O. George Levey, tobacconist, Dixon Street, was similarly charged. and his wife was charged with assisting him. Both pleaded guilty. Levey was Uued £2O. and his wife £L.
