GIRL KILLED IN RUNNING TO CATCH TRAM CAR.

THROWN HEAVILY BY MOTOR; SISTER ESCAPES. Struck by a motor-car last evening, Miss Catherine May Smyth, aged thirty-one years, received fatal injuries when running to catch a tramcar in Patterson Street, Freeman’s Bay, Auckland. Miss Smyth received terrible head injuries and a compound fracture of the right leg just above the ankle. Death was almost instantaneous. Miss Smyth and her younger si c ter Annie, were running across from Franklin Road to catch the Herne Bay tram, standing in Patterson Street. Miss Annie Smvth was in the lead, and cleared the motor coming from the city, driven bv J. Brady, a taxi driver. Miss Catherine Smyth was struck heavily and was carried a few yards before being thrown clear. Miss Smyth was thrown heavily on the concrete. fhe body, which was shockingly mutilated, was removed to the morgue.

Mount Pleasant Hill Road. At the meeting of the Mount Pleasant Burgesses’ Association a lively discussion took place on the necessity for improved roading on the Mount Pleasant Hill, several residents complaining of the dangerous state of the main road after the first, two or three hundred yards up the hill had been traversed. It was pointed out that two vehicles could not pass comfortably. that no provision for pedestrians existed. To make the road sufficient for' the future traffic of the suburb would require the raising of loan money. The bearing of the present system of rating on the raising of loans, and on the progress of settlement, was also discussed, anti comparisons of rates levied in the Mount Pleasant district and Sumner Borough respectively were presented ' to the meeting.

New Cranes at Port. There are now two additional electric cranes at- Lyttelton ready for erection on No. 7 wharf. One crane arrived by the Matakana and the other by the’ Tekoa.

In Memoriam. The first anniversary of the death of the Rev Father John Riordan was commemorated at St Patrick’s Church, Ross, on Wednesday. Solemn High Mass of Requiem was celebrated at ten o’clock by the Rev Father Healy, parish priest, assisted by the Rev Fathers Long, Iloulahan and Dr Kennedy. Other priests present were: The Rev Fathers M’Monagle, Finerty, and O'Meegan. The large congregation included visitors from Hokitika, Rimu and South Westland. Subsequent to mass the congregation, supplemented by many townspeople, proceeded to the cemetery, where, a memorial, erected by the parishioners and friends was mnvtiled.
