“COME TO DINNER,” SAID SID HICKMOTT.

SO ST ALBANS MEN ’ JOINED IN MERRILY. The “Star’s” cricket correspondent writes:— The St Albans Ist XI., winners of the senior A cricket competition for 1925-26, are fortunate in possessing such a keen and enthusiastic member as Mr S. W. Hickmott, whose own and family connection with the club dates back many years. “Sid” generously considered that it would be a good idea to celebrate the team’s win by giving the eleven a dinner. This most enjoyable function duly eventuated on April 19, and to say that every member of the team enjoyed himself and appreciated his host’s generous action is putting it very mildly indeed.

The “Senior Cup” was duly filled and passed round to honour several toasts, Mr Don Sandman (captain) expressing his and the team’s appreciation of Mr Ilickmott’s hospitality, and also his thanks to the team for their consistent practice and keenness. He also made fitting reference to the memory of the late Rupert Hickmott, who had played for the team before the war.

It was very pleasing to.the members of the team to have present Mr 11. A. Bishop, who captained the St Albans senior XI. in 1909-10 and 1910-11, when the club last won the grade. Naturally, reminiscences were the order for a while, and it was found that of the previous winning teams there were Messrs Sandman, Brunton, and Allard still playing for the side. Of the present team, Crawford, Masters, Norrie, Dorreen, Reese, and S. W. Hickmott were in the winning senior XI. for the first time. A. Thomas and F. Woods had several times been in the winning teams for Linwood and Sydenham respectively, while R. 11. North had previously been in the Riccarton winning team, and also in the Lancaster Park XI. with 11. A. Bishop, which was in 1904-5, the last season of club cricket before the district scheme originated.
