BIG PRIZES FOR DOG RACES, NOT FOR MEN.

To the Editor. Sir- All who enjoy good cycle, racing will agree with the sentiments' expressed in the letter signed “ Curious ” published in to-night’s “ Star.” T had the pleasure of seeing Mr Fitzgerald ride when he was here some months ago. lie gave a splendid exhibition, and appeared to be popular with riders and the public alike. Fitzgerald seems to be training solidly, and O’Shea the local champion, is right at the top of his form. A match between these two. over three distances, would prove a great draw. Cannot something l>c done to arrange this meeting? Those in charge at English Park seem to expect such riders to compete in handicap races, and ride in several heats, with a remote chance, of winning a few pounds. At the same time they put on a race for dogs and give the winner something like £25. Now don't you think that some idea? Whippet racing is no doubt all right in its place, but it does not appeal that much to the < hristchureh people.

It was advertised that Fitzgerald was to compete on November 7 but he aid not do so. .Did he enter for any of the e\ ents, or did he give anv promise to ride? Tf he did either of these things some, reason should have been given for his non-appearance. Tf he did not then who was responsible for the advertisement? A lot of people were disappointed. Is it Jack Fitzgerald or his brother who is to race Sowdcn?_ The public are not told these things. Thanking, you in anticipation. 1 am, etc., *• K. C. C.
