UNUSUAL POSITION.

Tor rrcss Association. DUNEDIN, June 25. An unusual position arose in the Conciliation Council proceedings of the Otagn-Southland Agricultural, Dairying, Fruit and Pastoral Assistants’ Union dispute. No assessors appeared to represent the employers. Air Cookson, who appeared for the latter, stated that a conference cf farmers and fruitgrowers had objected to any award for farm workers. Their objection Avas so strong that any attempt to force conciliation proceedings would only delay their appearance before the Court. There never had been a farm hands’ aAvard, and the matter vitally affected the whole Dominion. The Conciliation Commissioner stated that the matter could not l>c referred to the. Court until dealt with by the Council. If the employers failed to appoint assessors ho must appoint them himself. There was nothing in the Act to compel them to attend, and th? matter could be referred to the Court without recommendation. The sitting was adjourned till July 2.
