The strike on the AA’est Coast at Alillerton still continues, on account of the dispute between tlie union and the management as to seniority in the matter of employment, the miners being determined not to resume until the men who arc idle are employed in their turn. The management claim they arc selecting tlie men according to their suitability in the particular class of work required. Both sides arc marking time, but the men express their confidence of gaining their point.A short time ago the trustees of the Invercargill Savings Bank gave the Otago University a sum of £I(MX) in order to provide a scholarship for Southland boys at the University. The registrar of the University, Air H. Chapman, has now received a further gift from the trustees of £IOOO to be used for the establishment of a scholarship for girls attending the Southland or Gore High Schools. The trustees suggest that tlie regulations governing the previous scholarship for boys should be made to apply to these ones for girls.
