CLIMBED A CLIFF WITH BOY ON BACK.
UNCONSCIOUS LAD ON LEDGE. THRILLING RESCUES. LONDON. April 29. With an unconscious boy tied to his back with a rope, Peter Mitchell, a signalman, made a thrilling cliff ascent at Cove, near Abardeen. While gathering primroses John Smith, fourteen, fell down the rocks, a distance of 40ft. He was rendered unconscious, and lay within 2ft of the incoming tide. One of his companions reached Smith and pulled him on to a ledge, while others ran for assistance. Mitchell, tying the unconscious boy to his back, successfully ascended the dangerous rocks, treacling on jutting ledges not more than 12in wide. NINE-YEAR-OLD HERO. A nine-year-old boy's heroic effort to save his brother from drowning was described at the inquest at Rochester on Patrick Doyle, aged five, son of a labourer, of Strood. While the two were playing on the bank at Temple Creek Patrick fell in. The brother, Francis Michael, jumped Into the water and succeeded in bringing the unconscious boy ashore. Efforts at resuscitation, however, were unavailing. The Coroner, in recording a verdict of death from misadventure, commended Francis for his gallant attempt.
