Messrs Norman Rico and G. Garlick (Sydney) are staying at tho United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs W. S. Brown, of Spreydon, left on Thursday last on a visit to tli© Islands. Mr C. Gostelow, Chief Actuary, Government Insurance Department, National Provident Fund -and Friendly Societies, is in Christchurch. Mr Robert Cole, of New Plymouth, arrived in Christchurch this morning and is staying with his father, Mr J It. Cole, Berry Street, St Albans. Messrs J, C. Lei ten, R. J. Murphy, R-. E. Cunningham (Wellington), and W. Wynyard (Auckland) are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr Justice Sim and Lady Sim will arrive in Christchurch from Dunedin on Monday. His Honor will conduct a sitting of the- Supremo Court m Christchurch next. week. Messrs Maurice E. Denniston, 11. Lean (Wellington), C. E. Goodwin (Melbourne) and Jack Harris (Napier) are among the recent arrivals at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr H. S Williams, who' for the last four and a half years has been manager of tho New Zealand Picture Supplies in Oamaru, has received notice of his promotion to the management of tho Liberty Theatre in Christchurch for the same firm. While Mr Williams will be heartily congratulated upon his promotion, his loss to Oamaru will be keenly felt, as ho has identified himself with every movement that has been of a progressive and charitable character. Ha will leav© for his new home with the very best wishes of the whole community. He is to be succeeded by Mr Nielson, of Dunedin.” A number of citizens assembled at Warner’s Hotel last evening when a banquet was tendered to Harman P. Finemore, formerly managing director of Butler’s (N.Z.) Limited, who will leave on Monday for an extended business tour of the United States, England and the Continent. Mr H. F. Stevens •presided. During the evening speeches were made by the chairman (Mr 11. F. Stevens) and Messrs W. Baxter. N. F. Westwood, D. Haig, S. Jacobs, J. Sutton, Crosbie and L. E. Strachan, each of whom referred to the esteem in which Mr Finemore was held in the business community, not only in Christchurch. but throughout the Dominion. On behalf of the business community, and more especially the members of the chemists’ and aerated water industries, Mr Finemore was presented by Mr Stevens with a substantial token of the esteem in which he is held. Mr Finemore suitably responded.

Senior-Sergeant D. Jackson, who has been in charge cf the Ashburton police district for some years, and who will retire from the force at the end of this month, conducted his last cases in the Ashburton Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when reference was made to tho fact by the Magistrate and the local solicitors. The Magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley) said tho senicr-sergeant had done duty in the force for thirtyfive years, much of it in Canterbury. He had conducted his cases very fairly, which was appreciated by the speaker. At at later stage Mr H. C. O’rbell, on behalf of the members of the legal profession, mado a presentation to the whom ho congratulated on his retirement, and to whom ho expressed best wishes for the future. Mr Orbell presented the officer with a cigarette holder.
