Jn Nanking the position is uncertain and there is much suppressed excitement, which necessitates continued precautions. The amount of unrest, which is considerable, is jeopardising the position. Anglo-American and Japanese reports from Hankow .state that the Chinese authorities in C'hung-kiang allowed the strikers to got out of hand. Many foreigners took refuge on gunboats. Foreign telegrams from Hankow speak of tlio riots in C'hung-kiang on "Wednesday, as though the acute trouble was passed and the absence of further wireless messages from Cliungkinng Naval Division endorses this
