Jones, who, late at night, m darkness, took their chance and went into the, place where they know desperadoes were hidden.- IV® have a detective force in New South Wales, "hich, i„ my opinion, is second to none, and I have very much pleasure m passing on this praise to those doteetives.” Judge SHiolcs paid this tribute when Joseph Duffy, aged 25, who had been convicted at Darlinghurst Sessions o* = a. charge of having broken into the premises ol -Tack Bros.. Lt<J.. Strand. :.i spit© oi his sworn statement that" ]r§ was only marking time in that place preparatory to making an attack on the diamond safe in the jewellery c> tablishmcnt of Stewart Dawson and co.. Ltd., was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude. In passing sentence. Judge Seholes said that it was obvious from Duffy’s own statement that lie was out that night for tho purpose of blowing safes. His capture was fortunate, as it nipped in the bud bis career of crime for a timo at least. One point in the prisoner’s favour w ;J - that he had not armed himself with a revolver when he. embarked on tho desperate job. If firearms had ben found in his possession the sentence would have been tbe maximum of seven years’ penal servitude. The. jury, the judge went on, disbelieved tho story of the prisoner that his purpose was to blow the safe in (ho premises of Stewart Dawson. The jury had also disbelieved his allegations against another man whom tho prisoner tried to implicate.
