£6OO IN FINES.
FALSE INCOME TAX RETURNS. AUCKLAND COMPANY FINED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 19. At the Police Court, Campbell Ehrenfried and Company and two of its officers, Sidney Horace Abell and Albert Ernest Bollard, were each charged with making false income tax returns. Six charges were preferred and the Court imposed lines of £IOO and costs on each of six charges, two against the company and two against each of the other defendants. Counsel for the defence said that the defendants had pleaded guilty as the Act was all-embracing and it was hard to resist it, even if the offences were only committed by negligence. At the time of the offence, in 1920 and 1921, conditions were abnormal. The managing directors were absent and had no knowledge of the offences. The company’s managers followed the commercial system which evidently did not conform to the law of the Income Tax Act or to the Department.
