HOUSING SCANDAL.
SHOCKING CONDITIONS IN WELLINGTON. NINE IN ONE ROOM. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 19. The Wellington City Council’s committee on housing has reported that over 10 per cent of the population is overcrowded. There are 020 one-roomed dwellings, occupied by 1222 people. In a few cases as many as five to nine persons live in the same room. The committee estimated that the council could build a house for ~SOO, and, if the land cost £IOO. it could with all charges be sold at a price which 2Ss a week would cover. The council discussed the report, one member pointing out that land could not be obtained for £IOO. Pending information as to whether the Government would advance £IOO.OOO, the report was merely rt ccived. CONCRETE HOUSES. Mr Mitchell, an ex-councillor, and Mr Watt, who have been experimenting in standardised houses, announce that a five-roomed cottage of concrete can be built for £6OO and an extra room for £IOO, provided that they are all of the one design and all allowing £l5O for the land. The purchase money could be paid off in 36i years at £1 0s 6d a week for a four-roomed house and £1 3s 6d for a five-roomed one.
