Acting under instructions from a North Island syndicate, Messrs Park and Murdoch have applied for a large area of country in North "Westland for the purpose of oil prospecting. The territory lies on both side:? of the Terenakau River, ranging north from the Kumara district. Attention has been drawn to the possibilities by the report of the Government Geologist on oil deposits and a syndicate concerned will carry out an extensive prospecting scheme. The area of country marked off is upwards of 30,444 .acres, partly in Westland and partly in jhe Grey counties. A gold prospecting scheme is also about to be taken up by the Riniu Gold Dredging Company, Ltd., in the Waimea district of Westland County. Four ordinary prospecting areas have been applied for and it is understood an area of about 1000 acres will bo tested with a keystone borer.
