The Hon A. S- Malcolm went north tv the ferry steamer last night. Mr C. L. Orbell, of Timaru, went north last evening. Mr F. Horn, M.P.. was a passenger from Wellington by last night’s ferry steamer. Mr John Itankine, New South Wales manager of D.C.L. Whisky, is at present on a business visit to Christchurch . Mr Barry Keesing (Wellington) is a recent arrival at the United Service Hotel. Mr .7. T. Weiiins. Melbourne, is a recent arrival at- Warners Hotel. Judge M. Gil tedder, who has been presiding over a slitting of the Native land Court at Invercargill, has returned i« Wellington. Mr J. A. Macphferson. M.P.. was a passenger by last evening's express from the south. He went on to Wellington by the ferry steamer. The Hon George Fowlds has been re-elected president of the Auckland University- College Council. Professor A. P. W. Thomas was re-elected vicepresident. Mr J. R. Arkle. who has been acting as deputy-registrar at tho Napier Supreme Court, has beeD appointed clerk to the Gisborne. Magistrate’s Court The Hon Geo Fowlds will be one of the speakers at the Pan-Pacific Food Conservation Conference to be held in Honolulu in the first week in August. He expects to return to Auckland about October 15. Mr R. M. D. Morten, president of •the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and Mr -Tames Deans, left for Weliington last night. They will attend the annual conference of the Council of Agriculture ,to be held in Wellington to-day. Mr Sydney Butler. L.R.A.M., conductor of the Juvenile Choir, ha* been engaged as ten or soloist by the Royal Wellington Choral Union for their performance or Handel’s “Samson” on August 6. and hv the Dunedin Choral Society for “Der Frebchuiz” on August 19 and 20. Archbishop Julius arrived in Hokitika from Christchurch on Saturday, and held services at Kumara, Stafford. and Hokitika on Sunday. All Saint's Church (Hokitika) was crowded on Sunday night for the evening service when a number of young people were confirmed. In the course of his address the Archbishop paid a high tribute to the vicar (Rev A. C. Purchas) who is shortly relinquishing his duties in Hokitika parish. Mr FX. S. Hough, accountant of the Bank of New Zealand at Christchurch, and recently manager of the Suva branch, has arrived in Auckland to take up the position of sub-manager in succession to Mr A. E. Bouillon, who goes io Hamilton' as manager, states the Auckland correspondent of the "Star. Mr J. H. Hammond, tho present manager at Hamilton, is retiring. After a brief and severe attack or pleurisy, Mr P. Fitzgerald, a member of the “ New Zealand Times ” commercial staff and a well-known man in Grey mouth, died yesterday morning in Grey mouth. He was under forty years of age. Mr Fitzgerald was popular wherever he was known. His people were for many years connected with the Suburban Hotel. Greymouth. He leaves a sister and a brother. Mr Robert Dorm, who died in Hamilton the other day from injuries reeeived in an accident, was for many years a resident of Ashburton, and was a brother of Mr James Donn. For a considerable time Air Donn wa-s a member of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade, and represented the brigade in various teams’ events at a number of demonstrations. With bis brother he held the record tor the tv, r o-men ladder rescue event. The death occurred at Hamilton on Friday of Mr Alfred Me r ring ton. at tho age of seventy-two years. The late Mr Merrington was born in Hertfordshire. England, and came, to New Zealand in 1893. He settled in Hamilton and followed bis occupation as a tinsmith, from which he retired six years ago. He took a keen interest in church work, being a member of the vestry and a- lay reader ip the Church of England. He was twice married, and leaves a widow and an adult family.
