OBITUARY.

JABEZ LORD. The death occurred* on Saturday of one of the few remaining pioneer* of Canterbury, jn the person oi Mr oiaoez Lord. Deceased, who was in his eighty-eighth year, was born in Halifax, 'Yorkshire. Along with his wife, who pre-deceased him some twentyseven years ago. they sailed for New Zealand in the Clontarf. arriving early in the year 1860. Mr laird maiife sev. oral tramps over the Port Hills, carrying his personal belongings, which was the only means of getting them to a flax hut in Cashel Street, near the Avon. Soon after his arrival Mr Lord made for the country and purchased a small farm in the Gaurtc-itay district, thereafter engaging in contract work, carrying wool from Racecourse li and many other noted stations. Late* on farming pursuits were carried on for a great many years, anti deceased was one of those who instituted the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association's show. He carried oft many prizes in the various departments, especially in the Southdown sheep class, in which lie was keenly interested in those days. He took a keen interest in church matters ; St Matthew's Anglican Church, Courtenay, receiving untiring assistance from himself and his family For the past twenty years the deceased had lived a somewhat retire life

Mr Lord leaves a family of eight sons and two daughters to mourn their loss. The fame raj took place on Monday last, at the Lin wood Cemetery, the pall-bearers being his four sons, Messrs F, Lord. J. C. Lord, T. P. Lord and F. W. Lord. Many old associates and friends were present. Wreaths were sent by Mr and Mrs H. Quane, the staff Messrs H. Quane and Co., and Miss Allen. Richmond, the staff Messrs F. A. Cook, Ltd.. Mr Tovey-Cozens. London, Mr and Mrs J. C. Lord. Mr nnd Mrs K. Lord, Mr and Mrs Arthur Wilson. Mr and Mrs James Lawrie. Mr and Mrs Horace Wilson, Mr and Mrs Ernest Wilson, and Airs and Miss Wilson. Tributes of sympathy were received from many friends.
