NORTHERN UNION TRIALS. By Telegraph-Press Association—Copyright Sydney “ Sun ” Cable. (Received January 11, 10.35 a.m.) LONDON, January 10. The first trial match at Leeds to select a team for the Australian tour revealed plenty of first-class forwards available, notably Bowman, of Hull, who was a big success. The second row men, especially Brough (Oldham), and Thompson (Leeds), were keen opportunists. Carter (Batley) was conspicuous as a loose forward. The half-back honours unquestionably belonged to Parkin (Wakefield) and Whitty (Hull), rhe former being a genius. The three-quarter play was inferior, all of them fumbling. Play was lively owing to the frosty and insecure grounds, which were sprinkled with snow. Bacon (Leeds'* and Howley (Wigan) were the best centres. The wings had a trying time. Ring (Wigafti) was worthy of selection. Both full-backs, Knapman (Oldham) and Robinson (Batley) were satisfactory. Several players were injured and one retired.
