SWIFT AND SUDDEN.
A RAID BY DETECTIVES. 0 (Special to the <f Star.") WANGANUI, January 11. A swiit and sudden descent was made by detectives and polio© last evening on premises occupied by Chinee© in Ridgeway Street, and, although the next hour’s proceedings were in camera behind closed doors, occasional shrill and excited Chinese voices inside and the sight of policemen posted outside the door caused a curious crowd to collect. Daring the raid, a party of four Chinese arrived in the locality, but at the sight of the police then executed a manoeuvre, known in military parlance as ‘‘left form," and furtively glided into a neighbouring marble bar to order ice creams. The raid was in search of opium, but it i s understood the results were not highly productive.
