ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
CAR AND CART COLLIDE. A motor-car and. spring cart camo into collision at the intersection of Gloucester and Manchester Streets about 4.30 yesterday afternoon. The cart was proceeding in an easterly direction along Gloucester Street when it was struck by the car which was travelling at a smart pace in a northerly direction along Manchester Street. The driver of tho cart did not hear tho motor until he hail emerged into Manchester Street. Had he pulled up his horse, the car would probably have struck the animal with considerable force. But with commendable presence of mind, he turned the horse sharply round in the same direction as that which the motorist was traveling. with the result that the motor struck the cart in tho rear, and the force of tho impact was considerably minimised. The collision was sufficiently violent, however, to dislodge the driver of the cart from. his seat and throw him heavily to the roadway. He was promptly attended to, however, and though outwardly unhurt, he complained of severe pains in the back, but refused to be conveyed to the hospital. The horse escaped injury, but one side of the cart suffered considerable damage. PATIENT CUTS HIS THROAT. Pf.r Press Association. GREYMOUTH, January 10. Ambrose Kearin, sged twenty-five, a patient at the Grey River Hospital, cut his throat at the institution yesterday. The injury is serious, but ho is likely to recover. DEATH FROM NATURAL CAUSES. AUCKLAND, January 10. An inquiry into the death on Kata Duggan and an autopsy by two doctors supports the opinion that death was due to natural causes, though the result of the post-mortem examination is not yet disclosed. It appears that some marks on the neck suggested a possibility of strangulation, hut it is now understood that these are duo to advanced decomposition.
