FORESTRY BELT BURNED.
Pre?s Association ASHBURTON, January 10. The destruction of pasture, forestry plantations, anil belts by fire, which is usually attributed to sparks from steam engines, continues in various quarters, keeping the settlers on the alert, for fire cidis, involving terrible anxiety. Half a mile of the County Council forest belt at Carew, twentyeight miles from Ashburton, was destroyed yesterday, despite the efforts of 150 settlers. It is believed that the forest was ignited by a spark from a. traction engine hauling wool. The fire caught the plantation across the road in several places Constant fighting smothered the omui^Kn.
