A New Plymouth message states that the War* Memorial Committee has accepted a tender for the Cenotaph in local stone. The memorial will cost about £2OOO. The Friday night preceding Christmas appeals to the Yuletide purchaser. The thoroughfares were crowded last night with the -usual late night sightseers and parents and others laden with parcels. All manner of shops were packed till closing time. Outward expresses this morning carried big crowds of passengers. The 8.50 train for Dunedin drew seventeen cars, all well filled, while the attraction of the Christmas race meetings, the exhibition and scenic trips called many to the West Coast. The Greymouth train was made up of fourteen oassenger cars and there were few scats unoccupied.
