FREEZING SEASON OPENS.

Although freezing operations were commenced at Fairfield and Belfast on Thursday, the remainder of the Canterbury works did not open for the season till to-day, which was the date fixed by the companies. At present only small boards are being worked, but a rush of stock for freezing is anticipated. The shortage of rape, caused by the dry weather, will result in much stock being sent to the works when it is not in the right condition.

After the harmonious discussions between the companies and the unions at the last Arbitration Court sittings, when the new award was made, the employers are confident that this season’s operations will be free from trouble. There is a good supply of labour, but few men have been engaged so far.
