REDCLIFFS GALA.

A ' SUNNY OUTIN G. Fine weather, with a lively easterly blowing across the Estuary, greeted the ttedcliha gala this afternoon. From Estuary Road to the Esplanade the- committee bad converted the highway into fluttering lines of gaily coloured flags and bunting. Nine tents accommodated the stalls, which included a large afternoon tea tent, later to be used for the evening cabaret dancing to music supplied by Brook's Jazz Band. The side shows included joy rides on Shetland ponies, a box-ball alley, a. Christmas tree and bran tubs and other novel attractions, whilst amongst the ladies’ stalls were those for produce, cake, soft drinks, lollies, ices and cigarettes. The ladies interested had gone to no little trouble decorating their temporary stalls, all of which looked inviting to the visitors. v A feature of the entries was the number of clubs entered under the Rowing Association for the four events of the programme. These included rrews from Avon, Union, Canterbury, Cure. Sumner and Lyttelton. The punt race, one-man yacht races and Sea Scout lifeboat races all drew good entries, and provision was also made for land sports for old and young of both A promising feature of the programme was the motor-boat races and The aquaplaning display. During the afternoon splendid programmes of music were contributed bv the Woolston and Sumner Marine Bands. Large numbers of people began to arrive early in the afternoon by tram and motor-ear. and with the appearance of the white-winecd fleet from the Sailing Club on the blue waters of the Estuary the gala front assumed an animated aspect that promised well for t-lie financial success of the venture. Messrs TI. Le Page, president. J. V. Budge, secretary, and Clough, honorary treasurer, spent a. busy time from the start, and successfully completed arrangements for the box- , ing tournament, under the auspices of the Christchurch Boxing Association on the grounds on Monday evening. Tho proceedings were opened by Mr TT. H. Nicholson, the Mavor of Rumner. who was introduced by the president, Mr IT. Le Page.
