LABOUR JUBILANT.
GOVERNMENT MAJORITY GONE. Ey Telegraph—Pres® Association—Copyright Reuter's Telegrams (Received December 8, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, December 7. Labour headquarters this morning are jubilant at th« result of the elec* tions, which so far have emphasised the disappearance of the' Government majority and the fact that Labour can 6till claim to be the official Opposition. The Labour successes are attributed to the intensive work of the Labour Party during the last two years, and also the consistent and determined at titude in regard to unemployment. It is pointed out that it is very significant that the have so far gained no seats from Labour. The defeat of Mr Arthur Henderson is much regretted by Labour supporters. It is pointed out that the Liberals and Conservatives combined against him. the Conservative candidate having withdrawn. Conservative headquarters are unwilling to make a. statement in regard to the election before the returns are complete. The defeats are attributed entirely to dear food, a cry which, iu the circumstances of a hurried election. they bad no time to effectively contradict.
Mr Churchill arrived in London at noon, and appeared to be m high spirits. He declined to discuss the situation He said he had not heard the rumour that he was to be invited to contest West Derby.
Mr Asquith and Mrs Asquith and Lady Bonham Carter will leave Glasgow for London to day. They expressed de light- at the results, Mrs Asquith exclaiming, “Is it not wonderful?”
