His Excellency the Governor-General has arranged to present a silver trident to the best all round Sea Scout troop in the Dominion, the judging to be annually. Lieutenant-Commander Tibbs, Headquarters Commissioner for Sea Scouts, has been appointed tho examiner.

The new publio library at Sefton was opened yesterday by Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P. Professor J. Shelley was also present and donated twenty books to the library, which is the outcome of a bequest of the late Mr Janies Young, who left in his will £SOO to purchase a 6ite and £IOOO to be set aside as an endowment, the . interest from which to be expended in books annually. If. provision, could be made for a degree requiring high mechanical skill as welT as wide knowledge of at least one of the crafts, stat'd Mr C. H. Opie to the Board of Governors of the Christchurch Technical College last evening, it would bo to the credit of the New Zealand University. The innovation would have the advantage of encouraging and helping some of the best brains in the country that at present were not receiving sufficient recognition. The competition in deportment has been a feature at the annual sports of the Sumner School for the Deaf. At the sports this week Dr Syme’s annual prize, was keenly competed for. The event included many form of marching and posing, whilst balancing on the head a vessel filled with water. Joyce M’Leod (senior) and Lilian Neilsen (junior) were the winners- Sylvia Robinson and Pearl Kennedy were equal in the girls’ 100yds championship, Walter Burkhardt winning the boys’ event.

Tlie Ceilidh of the Scottish Society was held on Thursday night, Chief J. S Chisholm presiding. After evidence had been given for three hours by licensees that accommodation in Greymouth was very short and that the hotel would fulfil a great need by catering for tourists and travellers, the Westport Licensing Committee granted yesterday a. transfer of the license of Thomas O’Brien from the Caledonian Hotel to the Temperance Hotel. The premises will be known as the Hotel Dominion.

Revelations as to the existence of an insidious drug traffic in Greymouth were made at the Greymouth Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when Sydney Herbert Green, who had been working at the Putara sawmill, was charged with attempting to sell to a number of the Chinese race a quantity of laudanum that could bo converted into opium for smoking purposes. Detective J. D. Young said that Green had aroused suspicions by loitering about the Chinese, quarters of the town and when accosted and searched two ounces of the drug were found in ' his possession. The matter was viewed seriously by tho police, as there was a traffic in this drug conducted bv Europeans of standing in the town. The Magistrate held that there was no attempt to sell and the case was dismissed.

The evening meeting of the Kirwee Amateur Athletic Club was held in the Kirwee Domain on Thursday. There was a large number of interested spectators, and some good euort was witnessed.
