FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE.

COLLECTING FOR PATIENTS An allegation that ho had been collecting subscriptions from the publio tor Christmas presents for children in the Christchurch Hospital was made against William Thomas Burridge. thirty-three years of age. at the Magis trate’s Court this morning before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M. Burridge, who entered a plea of not guilty, was charged with being a rogue and vagabond within the meaning of the Police Offences Act in that ho imposed on a private individual. Minnie Wilson, by falsely representing that he had been authorised by the matron of the Christchurch Hospital (o collect money for Christmas presents tor the children in the Hospital, with a view io obtaining money. At the time ot Ins arrest, Burridge had in bis possession the sum of £4 2s Id in money, and also a number of collecting sheet* printed with the words, “In aid of Christchurch Hospital Patients* Christmas Presents." Spaces were provided lor the names and addresses of the donors. One of thp forms had dona lions, amounting to a little over £6 entered on it. On the application of Chief Detective A. Cameron. Burridge was remanded till next Wednesday. The Magistrate (to Burridge): Are you applying for bailP Burridge: Yes, sir. Chief Detective Cameron interposed that Burridge had broken his probationary license. The Magistrate: How has he broken it ? The chief detective: He took out % prohibition order against himself, and he is now found in possession of liquor.. Tho Magistrate granted the accused bail, self in the sum of £l5O and two sureties of £IOO each.
