Bridgemau (Oswestry), Conservative; Lady Terrington (M ycombe). Liberal; Mr R. M’Neill (Canterbury)* Conservative); and Sir Robert, Horne (.Hillliead), Conservative), have been elected. Sir Donald Maclean (Liberal) and the Countess of Warwick (Warwick and Leamington), Labour, have beeu beatenSir A. L. Stanley (Liberal) was beaten at Knutsford by a Conservative, Brigadier Makins, by a majority of 80. Admiral Sir Guv Gaunt had a narrow victory in Buckross with a majority of 214 over the Liberal candidate. Sir John Simon (Liberal) has been re-elected for Spen Valley. The Rt Hon T. J. Macnamara (NX.) had a majority of 80 in a three-cor-nered fight at Camberwell. Sir Robert Sanders (Minister of Agriculture) was beaten at Bridgewater. Sir L. Worthington Evans, Postmas-ter-General, Mr R. Smillie (.Labour), and Sir John Norton-Griffiths (Conservative) were elected. Mr Baldwin. Colonel L. C. M. S. Amery, the Rt Hon Austen Chamberlain. and Mr Neville Chamberlain (all Conservatives), have been elected. Mr Ramsay Macdonald (.Labour) and Dr W. A- Chappie (Liberal) were elected. The Duchess of Atholl (Conservative) and Mr Frank Hodges (.Labour) have been elected. Mr J. T. W. Newbold (Communist) was beaten at Motherwell John Scurr, who is an Australian bv birth, gained the Mile End division of Stepney. Mr J C. C- Davidson. Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, defeated Mr Frederick Guest. Mr J. M. Hodge (Liberal - ), and Mrs Wmtringham (Liberal), both have been elected, and also Mr -Sidney Webb (Labour) and Mrs Phillipson (C). Mr J. W. Molden (Liberal) w a s bottom of the poll in Islington West, which Labour gained in a triangular fight. Dr Chappie (Liberal) beat lias Conservative opponent. General Charteris, in Dumfries.

The Liberals regarded the day’s results as most satisfactory, destroying Mr Baldwin’s chance of getting a tariff mandate. Manchester again demonstrated its allegiance to Free Trade, though such a landslide was not anticipated. The scenes of enthusiasm were unprecedented. Mr -T. R. Clynes. retained bis seat at Platting. It was found that, the ten members elected included only oue Unionist, instead of seven, as previously. The Liberals have five members, all gains, and Labour four, an increase of one. The Liberal gain in Nottingham East is notable owing to the fact that the lace trade strongly agitated for protection. Liverpool provided real surprises. The Conservatives fully expected Lord Derby’s son, the Hon W. F. Stanley, to win back the. Edgehill seat, (Liverpool), which was lost to Labour last March, but he failed. Mr Crawford Greenne, a Conservative, won the Worcester seat from the sitting Liberal, Mr R. R. Fairbairn. Mr Ashmead Bartlett, the war correspondent, failed in West Hammersmith. Mr H. H. Spencer, a Liberal, retained Bradford South. The “Daily Express” comments:— “ Whoever wins the election, the Empire will be beaten.” It is rumoured that Mr Winston Churchill will be asked to contest West Derbyshire, where the election has been postponed owing to the deatn of Mr C. F. White, the Liberal candidate, against the Marquis of Harrington. The Duchess of Atholl (Conservative) gained the Kinross seat, defeating Mr Molteno (Liberal) by a majority of 650. Lady Terrington’s majority m the triangular contest lat Wycombe was 1683. The Earl of Win ter ton was re-elected for Horsham. Mr Lloyd George’s majority was 5176. Mr Frank Hodges (Labour) defeated two Liberals. A Labourite, Colonel Beauchamp Williams, gained the Kennington Division of Lambeth in a three-cornered fight. Colonel L. C. M. S. Amery’s return by an increased majority in the Sparkbrook Division made Birmingham solidly pro-Gorernment. but Mr Neville Chamberlain’s majority in the Ladyw’ood Division was reduced to 1544. Mr Baldwin’s majority in Bewdley was increased to 6369. The eleven women defeated yesterday included a Labourite, Miss Jessie Stephen, who opposed a Conservative., Major Cuyzer, in Portsmouth South. To-day’a declarations opened sensationally. The Liberal gain in Basingstoke (Hampshire) was shortly followed by an announcement that Miss Bondfield had gained the Northampton seat. 1 Captain W, G, A» Ormsby-Gore,

Under-Secretary. for the Colonies, was re-elected in Stafford.

The capture of Bridgewater from Sir Robert Sanders by Mr W. E. Morse (Liberal) with a majority of 1431 brought a climax to the .number of Government reverses in the agricultural districts where the Government hopes had been strongest. The most notable were the Liberal gains in Frome, Sudbury and Salisbury.
