LEVEL CROSSING FATALITY.
HORSE BACKS CART ON TO RAILWAY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, October 29. The railway fatality a.t the level crossing at George Street, Rocky Nook suburb, yesterday, in which Mrs Burt, aged thirty-five, was killed and her son Donald, aged seven, and John Taylor, dairyman, severely injured, was due to the horse backing on to the railway line when alarmed by the noise of the approaching train from Auckland to Henderson. Taylor, who was on a night round and was giving the> others a lift, was serving a customer when the horse became restiveHe jumped aboard the cart to check the animal, but before he could gain control, the float bad been backed on to the line right in front of the engine. Th© cart was smashed to pieces. Mrs Burt was struck on the bead and was picked up dead on the cattlestop. Taylor was also unconscious on the cattle-stop. while the boy was thrown on to the cattle-stop with his leg severely injured. Tli© remains of the cart were Hurled along th© line, one wheel being found fifty feet away, but the harness was cut and the horse escaped uninjured.
