An interesting situation has arisen oter the personnel of the Pacific Cable Board, particularly in relation to the chairmanship, which at present is in the gift of the British Treasurer under a somewhat archaic Statute, which also permits him to dispose of any surplus.It is understood that the Act will come up for eriew during the ensuing session, when its is hoped to modernise the provisions and remove the solo control from a partner who is not the largest shareholder. Meantime the position has been regarded as requiring a small portion of the occupant’s time t and has carried small emoluments. There is now a ' proposal to continue this policy by appointing an aged British official, long connected with the board, but it is understood that the Dominions dis agree with this. Therefore the pres, c-nce of the Premiers is opportune. It is believed that Mr Bruce and Mi Massey are both interested. There if the question to consider whether, ir view of the coming keen competition of wireless, for which private cables arc preparing elaborate and strong organisation, the Pacific Cable Boarc should not have a qualified executive end chairman, facing the extra cost ol the salary for the sake of efficiency, without which it is mostly likely tc fall behind its competitors in the "race for business.
