SPORTS MEETINGS.

SOUTHBRIDGE. The annual sports meeting of the Southbridge Athletic Sports Club was held in the Recreation Ground yesterday, there being a very large attendance, including a considerable number of visitors from Christchurch. Since last year the grounds have been greatly improved. A new and substantial grandstand has been erected Mr P. Delargey introduced Sir Heaton Rhodes, who had come down from Wellington to open the new grandstand, and saul that the stand had cost, £SOO. The residents had raised £370 by a bazaar, and the Ellesmere Domain Board had generously lent, the committee £IOO, leaving a small amount owing on the building. Mr Delargey also thanked the Domain Board for their special efforts in improving the grounds. Sir Heaton Rhodes was received with applause, and expressed his pleasure at being asked to open the building ll*- referred to the need for more physical exercises in life, particularly when children were at school. In the past the schools had tho curriculum crowded with subjects, and tbo physical department bad been more or less ignored, but now they were working the two together Sir Heaton Rhodes then called on Mrs P. Delargey. who cut the ribbon on the grandstand, amidst cheers. Mr M'Millan, chairman of the Domain Board, also spoke. Cheers for Mrs Delarffe.v. Sir Heaton Rhodes and tho Domain Board were given. I The Omihi Amateur Athletic Sports Club held an athletic meeting at Omihi yesterday. The club, which is purely art amateur body, was formed about a year venture of the club iu this direction, the previous one being a small gathering held last New Year’s Day. Fine weather favoured the sports, but a stiff nor'-wester, , blowing right across the ground, materially assisted the runners in the sprint journeyed from Christchurch and were particularly successful, especially in the open sprint events. They won practically every open race and field event, with the exception of the hammer throwing, all three places in this event being filled by local athletes. The track was on the rough side, but doubtless with the experience gained yesterday, the Omihi officials will rectify this defect at. their next meeting. The officials were as follow:—President, Mr T. A. Croft; judges, Messrs S. Burrows, J- Collie and J. Baxter; timekeepers, Messrs J. Dollan and R.. E. Humphreys; starter, Mr A. H.
