ASHBURTON GALA.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The monster gala promoted by the I Advance Ashburton Association -with the j object of raising additional funds for the : beautification of the town, was held in : the Ashburton Domain yesterday and was ; a thorough success in every way. The j weather conditions during- the morning did j not appear entirely favourable, but to- i wards afternoon the sun shone out ; brightly. The attendance was very large, i From all parts of the extensive Ashhur- j ton County, and from Christchurch, Tim* aru and other places, visitors arrived in I numbers, and, with almost the entire popu- | lation of the town and suburbs, spent the | day in the picturesque domain. Special arrangements were mode to I ensure the complete enjoyment of the largo numbers of children present-. A - programme of races for the children, ar- j ranged according to the classes they were in at the schools, was conducted by the various teachers, and liberal cash prizes were distributed to the young competitors. The children’s races were held in the morning, leaving the youngsters freo to watch the other events in the_^afternoon. A source of great delight to hundreds, particularly the children, was the pony trotting and rides organised by Mr J. Lewis. This department was a strong feature of the gala. The gala wag continued in the evening, the grounds being brilliantly illuminated by electricity, and dancing on the lawn was a popular additional attraction. The financial result of the gala. was entirely satisfactory, the gross receipts being £IOOO. The. aim of the Advance Ashburton Association was to raise £IOOO for the purpose of completing the beautifying work it had in hand and it was estimated that the gala would produce £6OO of that amount, eo that the expectations of the association have been more than realised. Of the largo army of helpers special mention must be made of the splendid organising work of Mr A. A. M’Donald president of the Advance Ashburton Association. and Mr E. J. O'Brien, secretary to the executive.
