LATE SPORTING.

DUNEDIN RACES. Per Press Association*. DUNEDIN. October 13. There was fine weather and the

MASTERTON RACES. CUP HORSES SHOW UP. (Special to the ‘‘Star.") MASTERTON, October 12. Six out of the seven starters in the Masterton ('up were New Zealand C up entrants. The he aa y course did not suit the two top weights which soon felt the burden and were early to drop out of the picture. Tittle River was most noticeable in the early stages and ran very nicely, taking the lead for some distance. Kilgour, Muraahi, Vagabond i.ud Ivahikatea then moved up. lvilgour cam© through, displacing Little River, with Vagabond handy. Kilgour and Vagabond came away in the run down the straight. Striding along well, Vagabond gradually forged ahead and. won by a lengih. Kahikatea came well at the finish but was a length behind Kilgour. Scion and Insurrection did not shape well, while Little River faded away at the business end of the race. Vagabond certainly shaped the best of the New Zealand Cup horses. \ agabond was quite at home in the heavy going, the conditions suiting him much better than apparently they did. Scion, Insurrection and Muraalii, which were in difficulties early in the race. Vagabond is the first aged horse to win the MasI ter to n Cup since Midnight Star in 1917, and is the fifth in the past twenty-six years. The New Zealand Cup candidate Zero Hour did not impress one with her running in the Lawn Handicap, cf one mile. She ran better in the latter stages of the race than in the first jiaid, but was lour lengths behind the winner at the finish. Quest made a poor showing in the Flying Handicap and was never sighted during the six furlongs, finishing in the ruck. The (Handstand Handicap, iri which two New Zealand Cup candidates. Kilbird and Helen Rufus started, was the best race of the day. Helen Rufus had the worst of the deal, losing fully three lengths at the start, but with a great effort she made this up and in a punishing finish disputed • <hq result with Kilbind, the latter just managing 1 to get home bv half a head. with ] Bumptious a head behind Helen RufusI The King Rufus mare ran a, great race and is apparently in good condition Ivilbird impressed with the manner in which lie galloped, though lie was lucky under the conditions to beau Helen Rufus.

WAIRARAPA NOTES

(Special to the “ Star.”) MASTERTON, October 11. Air Elgar has had no luck yet with his two Australian purchases. Black Ronald and Hallmark, but judging by the way the three-year-olds are getting through their work at Featherston they should soon break their maiden status. Tenterfield will yet come good as a hurdler, but at present he jumps too carefully. B. Burgess has the gelding in nice condition, though in his races on the flat he has been far from reliable. Insurrection is doing steady work at Opaki, "but it is doubtful if he will be ready to show to advantage in the New Zealand Cup. The Kemball stable has a good second string in Vagabond. 1 The win of Bonetter at Hastings shows that Air Kemball’s mare is back to form, and when at her best she can hold her own with the rest up to a mile and a half. \ If Trespass was kept to handicap events he would win more races, but his owner is a keen supporter of weight-for-age events and often starts his horses in the classics when another race on the programme would seem Chimera is not getting any younger but is galloping well on the tracks. Mr Yallance’s mare last year ran six furlongs with 9st 21b on her back in lmin 9 4-ssec. which stands as a re--1 cord. The Hawk made the same time. Mi* C- W. Boyd, the Masterton owner A has decided to have his horses trained at Tauherenikau in future. D. Hands is now looking after Aleriimas and Waimana. \ Lady Ben is doing nice work again at Opaki and is to compete at 'lren-t-hm. T. Higgins is sure the mare will stay a distance later in the season, as she likes to go on at the end of her . gallops. Bonnie Heather is none too hound, and has caused P. T Hazleman some trouble lately. The gelding is a good handicap horse up to a mile, and should win more races for Mr Elgar this season if his weak shoulder does not. go again. No less than, forty-five AVairarapa owned horses have, been entered for the "Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting. Mr AY. R. Kemball has the largest number engaged, but all stables in the district are represented. Suggestion which will represent Air W. E. Bid will in the C.J.C. Derby next, month, put up a good race in tha Hawke’s Bay Guineas by running Razz!© Dazzle to half a length. As this was the gelding’s first appearance this season, he is sure to improve with another race or two. Suggestion is to compete in the Champion Plate at Trentham. It is sixteen years since . the Derby was won bv a AVairarapa horse. Elevation being successful in the blue riband in 1907. CAULFIELD RACES POSTPONED.
