EVENTS OF THE WEEK

QUEEN CARNIVAL. The campaign has been launched. Cards have been issued. To-niglit at the Picture Theatre. Essie Owles, the Central Candidate will he shown upon the screen. Flags indicating positions were flown from the Pier buildings last Saturday for the first time, the order was. Red. north, first; Blue, south, second; White, central, third. Discussing the probable result a central supporter in predicting a “white” win said that the white flag, was the only one discernible at night, and that it would be at night the result would be announced, and in any case “all good horses win from the back. ‘‘ WHAT’S TH E T 1 ME ?’ ’ It is hoped that the Council have* not lost sight of the question of a cldck tower in the new post office building. Unless an application goes in early it will be very hard to get this necessary convenience after the plans are decided upon. Alention of a clock, recalls a gem attributed to “ Billy the Bear,” who was responsible for quaint sayings a few years ago in Christchurch. Accosted one day in Hereford Street, and being asked the time, lie retorted “ There’s a clock in the Square for poor people.” “ SINBAD ” COAT PETIT! ON. Entrants are reminded that the “ Sinbad ” Competition closes next AYednesday and that the winning poem will be published on October 20 in this column. A prize of one guinea will be given for the best effort ' after “Sinbad” style. The Bowling Club and The Conveniences were omitted from last week’s list of suggested subjects. A FEAST OF BEAUTY. Artists and lovers of beauty, should make a point of viewing the glorious s panorama of colour to be .seen just now, from Page’s Road, between AYiri ban a and Bexley Road. Numerous rows of hedges of gorgeous gorse in full 1 loom with light green and darker shades of trees, in the immediate background, 'and the Hills in the far background, with their overhanging mantle of violet haze, go to make up a picture, rarely equalled even in beautiful New Zealand. SOCIAL EVENING. A very pleasant evening was spent last Thursday at the residence of Airs W. Dean, George Street. Afusic, games and dancing were indulged in till the small hours of the morning. The prizes for games were won bv Airs M’Cree and Alias E. Spedding.' Mr Blunt and Mr Spedding tied for the Gentlemen's prize. Musical items were giren by Aliss Spedding and Afr G. Nunns, and the dance music was supplied by Airs Spedding end Airs Blunt A dainty supper was served by Airs Dean and Airs Al’Cree. The evening was brought to a close with cheers for Afr and Airs Dean, and a happy party left for town.

MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. The ladies fired the Inst of their competitions for the season last Alonday. The “snap shooting” prize donated by Air Busohl was won by Airs Stokes, with a score of sixty-five. The consolation resulted in a tie between Mrs Al’Clelland and Airs Sprosen. each 35. including handicap. In the shoot-off Airs Sprosen came first. Other good scores were Airs Busch! 33. ATisses Park 33. G. Buchanan 33. Mesdames Harding 32. Bishop 31. Stokes 31. Burmeister 30. Aliss R. Af’Clelland 31. Next Monday will be the last meeting for this season. POWER BOAT CLUB. The official opening of the club is to be held on Labour Day. The president will declare the season open at 1 p.m. There will he a race for boats under ten knots at 1.15 p.m. Speed boats at 1.45 p.m. Members and their friends will lie conveyed to Pleasant Point by launch. Afessrs R. A. Curtis. W. Alullons and A. Fuller were appointed a sub-committee t-o take charge, of the land sports, which will include adults’ and children’s races, a tug of war, and other novelty events. On the water, there will be yachtracing. and an exhibition of aquaplaning. Boat, owners from Redcliffs are particip'ating. At the committee meeting held last Saturday evening, the following part programme for the season was arranged October 27. at 5 p.m , first race for Rowland’s Trophy; November 10. race for special prizes from New Brighton to Shag Rock, and finish at Pleasant Point; November 24, second race for Rowland’s Trophy ; De comber 22. final race for Rowland’s Trophy. NEW BRIGHTON SURF BATHING AND LIFE SA A 7 ING CLUB. The first meeting of the new committee of the above club was held last Alonday evening. The following delegates were appointed Canterbury Surf Association, Messrs Knox, Stokes and Al’Dowell ; Royal Life Saving Society, Alessrs Stokes anti Feast; Canterbury Sports Protection Association, Mr Knox. The instructor reported that the following assistant instructors had been appointed—Messrs M*Dowell, Collins, Taylor, Summerfield, Cooper ami Clarkson. The opening day was arranged to be held on Labour Day and all details were lett to the following sub-committee— Alessrs Tosswill, Feast, Broome. C-hiverg and Robertson. The duty roster for the committee was a ranged, one member being in charge each week-end.

METHODIST CHURCH. An enjoyable social was held in tlie schoolroom on Wednesday last when the officers and teachers of the Sunday School entertained the parent* of the children. The annual report presented by Aliss Elsie Buxton showed that good progress was being mnde in all departments. Short addresses on the work were made by ATisses N. Ral lautyne and Eileen Buxton. Afesdanies Me-dd and Clark and Afessrs Boirnington and Rowan. Air A. H. Christian who has trained the children for the past, six anniversaries, was presented with n gold pendant. Appreciation was expressed of the work of the superintendent. Afr A. E. Lawry, and the retiring treasurer, Mr E. S incock. Games, a mock court and supper made up a most enjoyable evening. The services at Union Street to-mor-row will be in the morning, Rev F. V. Read, and in the evening. Rev If. Dudlev, F.R.A.S. At the Public School. North Beach. Bov F. F. Read will conduct Divine service at p.m. and services will he held on the second and fourth Sunday in each month.

SOUTH BRIGHTON NOTES'. A party in honour of Aliss Tui Brown’s birthday was given in the South Brighton Hall on Saturday lastbv Air and Mrs A. Brown. The hall was tastefully- decorated and a very pleasant time was spent in music, ringing and dancing. ATiss Brown was the recipient of a large number of presents. Air and Airs Smith, of Scott Street, gave a party at their home to celebrate the birthday of Afaster Alajor Smith. The juvenile*? had a very happy time in the afternoon, one. of the most popular items being joy rides in thejj* host’s car. In the evening the celebration 'was continued with an adult party. The New Brighton Jazz Club’s final carnival night will be held on Wednesday next,, October 17. NORTH BEACH NOTES, NORTH BEACH SCHOOL. The residents of North Beach had n social in the new school on Alonday evening last fo welcome Air J. F. AViison, who has been appointed head master. Afr Mil son asked for the co-operation and friendly criticism of the parents of th» scholars, and expressed the desire to take an interest in all matters appertaining to the welfare of the people of the district. PERSONAL. Afr and Afrs K. Robinson are staying at Mr A. K. Hadfield’s house, Bowhill Road. Afr and Afrs E. W. Freeman are staving at Dr A’Court’s house on the Esplanade. Mrs D. Bodger, of Tnnks Street, was taken to the hospital during the week, having contracted a cold which turned to pneumonia. Afr F. -T. Laurence Scott and familv hare returned to Jubilee Avenue after several months’ residence at Cashmere. LAWN TENNIS CLUB. The annual meeting of the North Beach Lawn Tenqis Club was held on Saturday last, Air 1 A. R. Blank, president, in the chair. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The matter of forming new courts on the land generously donated by Mr Bawker was gone into. It was decided to put down three complete courts at once.
