ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH. The Wednesday night services of preparation for the spiritual healing mission are veil attended, and real interest is being manifested. On Sunday evening the vicar is to preach on the subject of “ Some Home Truths About the Mission.” A special meeting of parishioners an 1 a social gathering were held at the mission room. Redcliffs, on Tuesday, when there was a good attendance. The plans for the addition to the Sunday achool were approved, and arrange ments made for the work to he put in hand at once. A musical programme was contributed bv Miss R. Brown and Messrs Adley and Morgan. Miss Oolettan. Miss Barber and Mrs Pidgeon. The annual missionary sale is to be held at the Parish Room on Tuesday H-fteraoon. Besides a programme ot music, Mrs Funnel], who has been lor •orne years in China, is to speak. ST LEONARD’S SQUARE. A very enthusiastic meeting was held :.Jn the Town Hall on Thursday even ' ing. when the Mayor, Mr \V |f. • Nicholson, outlined the steps which had been taken to enlarge St Leonard’s Square. His statement showed tiiat 1 good deal of trouble had been taken to find the owners of some of the sections. The meeting pledged itself to redeye the Mayor of the financial burden as soori as possible., and with this end in view a committee was set up. consisting of the Mayor and the presidents and the secretaries of the various sports clubs. It is expected that, under the auspices of the Beach Improvement and Beautifying Association and of the United Sports Association, a gala will be run in the season on such lines m will result in a handsome contribution to the fund being secured. Mr C. M. Roswell has been appointed organising secretary, Mr H. .T. Williams minute secretary, and Mr H. C. Jones assistant secretary. INTER,BOROUGH SOCIAL. A meeting of the sub-committee ot the United Sports Association was held in tho bowling pavilion this week. It was decided to notify the secretaries ot the various affiliated clubs of the date of the proposed social, November 1, and intimate that as only a limited number of ticket* wero'Sji vail able it was desirable to confine the'sale to club members. A pro rata distribution to the clubs was decided upon. It was decided to make arrangements with the local orchestra for music, and the entertainment programme was left in the hands'of the chairman. As the ladies of Sumner had expressed a wish, to help to make the event a borough success, it was decided to call a meeting of those interested and to ask the Mayoress, Mrs W. H. Nicholson. to preside. The chairman and the secretary were appointed to attend tho meeting and outline the programme. It was decided that the Mayor. Mr W. H. Nicholson, should be asked to preside at the social, and that the exMayor and par& donor of the shield, the Hon J. Barr. M.L.C.. should be asked to speak at the presentation ceremony.

SUMNER BRASS BAND. A general meeting of those interested was held at the “Cadena” Tea Rooms on Tuesday, Mr H. Smith presiding over an attendance of about twenty. It was decided to proceed with the erection of a bandroom, providing that a suitable piece of land could be obtained. A hope was expresed that a gift or even a loan of a small section would be offered. The erection of tho building would he carried out by the bandsmen and their friends at a small cost. It was decided to ask the council for the temporary use of a robm. It was staed that to have a band ■which would be a credit to the district it would be necessary to procure a num - ber of new instruments. As these would cost approximately £3OO. a thorough canvass of the district was arranged for at an early date. The following committee was appointed :—- Messrs H. Smith. U. Fenton. F. Neville. G. Williams. L. Griffiths' W. Carter. E.\ Newman. .T. O’Neill. G. Gallop. W. Morton. R. Unwin. G. Lindross. H. Kingsbury and A. AI. Don (honorary secretary). A FLOURISHING CLUB. The Sumner Bowling Club has a very fine record to its credit this year. It has recently extended its grounds, spending £4OB on alterations, £250 on purchase of new section adjoining, and a further sum of £2OO on laving it out. Besides this a small room is being added at a cost of £ll. The efforts of the club have been fully justified and the present membership is far and away greater than lor any previous season, being 77 ordinary members and 33 honorary. SUMNER LADIES’ GUILD. A meeting of Sumner Ladies’ Guild was held this week at Mrs 1. Wilson’s, Mrs G. W. C. Smithson presiding over a. good attendance. The treasurer’s statement showed a balance in hand of £< 19s Id. ’!'hc hospital visiting was reported on by Mrs C. M. Roswell. 3 11 was decided to give the programme «L the next bi-monthly concert at the Lyttelton Institute on October 25. Mr.s Young was elected a memlier. It resolved that members .should hand in the Christmas ditty bags at the next meeting, the bags to measure nine bv fourteen inches* and to contain Is and one needle book. The secretary was instructed to write to Mesdames T E. Whitfield and W. J. Williams, who are confined to their homes through illness. Mrs E. L. H. Brown's offer of her home at Euston Street for the next meeting on December 10 was accepted with thanks. A short musical programme was given by Misses Joughin and Perrot ; and Mrs Millar, of the Lyttelton Guild, gave an

address on the work done in port. Mesdames Clark and Pitcaithly were

present, from Lyttelton, and afternoon tea brought the gathering to a pleasant termination. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs Murray, formerly of (olenso Street, have now taken up their residence in St Albans. Mr C. Hanliam is visiting relatives in the borough. Mr O. Dacre. who was injured in a motor-car accident last Saturday, is progressing favourably. SALVATION ARMY CONCERT. On Wednesday evening in the Town Hall the Salvation Army Silver Band gave a most enjoyable concert, the proceeds from which were for the institutions oi the .Salvation Army for the benefit of the boys and girls. Mr C. M. Roswell, who presided in the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, Mr W. H. Nicholson, said be was glad to see such a large audience, supporting the Salvation Army in its good work It was one of the finest institutions in the world for the uplifting of mankind. and deserved the whole-hearted support of the community. After the chairman’s remarks a lengthy programme was presented, the items of which were warmly applauded by those present. Tho following was the programme: Selection. “Hallelujah,” Band; song. “ There is a Happy Land.’’ songsters; duet in character, Misses Hultquist and Herbert ; selection, “Great Masters,” Band; song. “ Stand Up and Bless the Lord.” songsters ; instrumental quintette, bandsmen ; recitation, selected. EFFICIENCY LEAGUE. The executive of the local branch of the V omen’s Efficiency League, met at Mrs Slater s residence. Satisfaction was expressed at the success of the effort to •erect a suitable Peace Memorial. The report showed that members of the league had collected £4O 18s 6d from the allocated districts. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on October 24 4t 3 p.m. in the Town Hall. CROQUET MATTERS. The Sumner Club’s Croquet Committee met recently. Mr T. F. Chambers presiding. The following officers were elected for t-he year:—Club captain. Airs H. C. Wilson; assistant club captain, Afrs I. Wilson; secretary, Air H. J. Williams. It was decided to enter teams for the senior and junior flag competitions and for the ladies’ pennant. A croquet tournament was arranged for Labour Day, an invitation to be extended to Air and Airs F. S. Aladdison.

A donation of one guinea was received for a trophy for junior players, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to tho retiring secretary and to Airs J. AI. B. Crawford,, who lor some seasons past had captained the club.

OPENING THE SEASON. In spite of predictions of seismic disturbances, the Sumner Tennis and Croquet Club extended an open invitation to its members and friends on Saturday last. Certainly the mist increased to a drizzle, hut large numbers attended and partook of the hospitality provided by the president, Air B. E. H. Whitcombe and Mrs Whitcombe. The Afayor and Airs Nicholson were in attendance and offered their liest wishes for the forthcoming season. In the evening a pleasant little dance was held in the Alasonic Hall, where the opening day proceedings were brought to a very happy termination. AlusicaT items were contributed by Afisses Perrot, G. Brown, J. Sorenson, Kemble, Allen, D. Joughin and -Messrs A. Brown, H. Brown and J. Johnson. SUMNER SEA SCOUTS. At a recent meeting of the Sumner Seat Scout Committee a letter was received from Air Smail, in conjunction with, the Christchurch Radio Society, offering to give a wireless concert iii Sumner, for the Scout Funds. It was decided to accept tho offer with thanks, and to hold the concert on October 17. A LOCAL COLLECTION. A meeting of the collectors for the British and Foreign Bible Society, was held at- “The Rae,” Redcliffs, Mrs A. M•_ Heaven presiding: The sum of £ls was handed in. OOU NCIL NOTES. The Standing Committee’s report showed that the- slips on the hill roads had bepn removed. The top dressing of Nay land and Grafton Streets was being carried out. A sub-committee was appointed to report on a suitable site for the borough memorial lamp. ’I he council's proportion of the repairs to the Sumner Road, amounting to £2OO, was recommended for payment. An application of the Rannerdale men to erect a sun shelter on the beach. was granted. Tt was agreed that the work of tar sealing the main mad from M’Cormick’s Bay to Heatheote Bridge be proceeded with, the council's contribution being £ll7. An application from the Royal Life Saving Society for permission to collect funds on the beach during November. was considered. Tt was agreed to suggest a date later in the year on account of the local clubs opening next, month. The matter of raising a loan for borough improvements was referred to the Finance Committee. AN HISTORIC EVENT.' An event that it creating a great deal of interest in the borough will take, place in the Town Hall on Wednesday next, at 8 p.m., when a wireless concert will be given in aid of the funds of the Sea Scouts. This is the first concert of the kind to be given in Sumner: The arrangements are in the hands of Mr J. I. Smail. The concert will not only be heard in Sumner but will be broadcasted all over New Zealand. However, it is for the benefit of the Sea Scouts that it is being arranged. So far the public seem to be keen to hear this novelty, as the tickets are selling very readily. The local committee have made arrangements for the erection of a six tv-foot mast in the section next to the hail, and everything augurs well for a successful evening.
