OF EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE. JAPANESE RELIGIOUS CEREMONY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney “ Sun ” Cable (Received October 1, 10.5 a.m.) TOKIO, September 29. The late earthquake caused an alteration in the coast at the bottom of Boso Peninsula, and some fishing ports are no longer useable. The, Imperial ancestors are now being ceremoniously informed of the deu tails of the earthquake and fire. The Emperor’s messenger is visiting the tombs of the Emperors to read the announcement of the disaster.
The Prince Regent conducted the announcement ceremony before the sacred mirror in the Imperial Palace at Tokio. A messenger was also sent to the grand shrines of the Shinto faitji to invoke peace and safety for Japan. The Emperor and Empress are taking up their winter residence in the Suma Palace near Kobe, the palace at Tokio being uninhabitable. The Emperor and Empress are setting an example in economy. They have cut the palace menus to one dish in addition to rice.
